One Hour a Week Can Change a Child's Life

“I became a good reader because of you and I really want to thank you for that.” — 3rd Grader at KesterAvenue Elementary

Become a Reading Partner to a struggling reader!
Once the new library is complete, The Wonder of Reading works with the elementary school to recruit volunteers to read one-on-one with students who are struggling readers.  Volunteers read with their students for one hour a week during school hours for at least six months.  Many of our volunteers have read with the same student for several years, making a tremendous impact on the child’s life.  These special volunteers are called "Reading Partners."

Reading Partners attend a comprehensive three-hour training session developed by Dr. Philip Kligman, professor of elementary education at Cal State University, Northridge.  Some of the methods included in the training are oral reading strategies, reciprocal questioning, partner reading, vocabulary study, and comprehension techniques.  The training has been specifically developed to instruct volunteers on how to inspire in a child the love of reading.

By the end of 2007, The Wonder of Reading will have more than 1,000 Reading Partners reading weekly in 187 schools throughout the Los Angeles area.  The results of our reading program have been amazing—shy students are suddenly asking questions, children with low self-esteem have more confidence, and students reading well below grade level catch up with the rest of the class.

Become a Friend of The Wonder of Reading!
If you are not able to volunteer as a reading partner with a student, volunteer as a Friend of The Wonder of Reading.  You can make a difference by helping us at our headquarters.  Please contact Maria Arteaga, Program Assistant at 323.634.7110 or via e-mail at marteaga@wonderofreading.org
