Becoming a Reading Partner

“It’s the most important thing I do.”
— Hawaiian Avenue Elementary School Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Reading Partner!

Every day hundreds of Wonder of Reading volunteers are making the world a better place by reading one-on-one with students in the public elementary school system.  And every day, our Reading Partners feel the reward of becoming a friend to a child in need.

•To get started, potential volunteers must register for one of our upcoming trainings. We have trainings at different times and locations throughout the Los Angeles area, so if you do not see a convenient training, please check back in a few weeks for new additions to our schedule.

•All Reading Partners must go through The Wonder of Reading’s three-hour training session.  The training is geared toward working with students who are one or two grades behind in their reading level.  The training was developed by Dr. Philip Kligman, professor of early education at California State University, Northridge and focuses on oral reading strategies, reciprocal questioning, partner reading, vocabulary study, and comprehension techniques.  Most important, the training stresses the fun of introducing students to the wonderful world of books.

•Reading Partners can be matched with a student at any one of our school sites.  Our volunteers read with students in the 1st through 5th grades for one hour each week during the school day.  We ask that Reading Partners work with their student for a minimum of six months.  Many of our Reading Partners read with the same student for several years.

•On the day of the training, Reading Partners will be asked to provide the names and telephone numbers of two personal references who have known you for at least two years. Background checks will be conducted.  Please bring a photo ID (drivers' licence, Cosco, etc.) No copies will be taken. References should not be family members.

•Reading Partners must submit a negative Tuberculosis test to the school.  (This is discussed further at the training session, and the necessary paperwork is provided.)

•Reading Partners must be at least 16 years old.

If you have any further questions about becoming a Reading Partner, please call for a Program Coordinator at 323.934.5540 or send us an e-mail at info@wonderofreading.org
